MEC optimistic on financing for elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja has said the electoral body does not expect to face funding challenges ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.

She said this on Tuesday at the start of a two-day Public Affairs Committee (PAC) Sixth All-Inclusive Stakeholders Conference at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre.

Mtalimanja: We are on track.

The conference ended on Wednesday.

“We do not anticipate facing funding constraints in our set activities for the elections, mainly considering how we have been working with the Treasury in supporting us,” said Mtalimanja, a judge of the High Court of Malawi.

She said in as far as their programming of activities is concerned everything is on the right track.

Mtalimanja said this is one of the reasons MEC anticipates holding smooth elections as financial resources are available.

In his presentation on the state of preparedness for the general election, MEC chief elections officer Andrew Mpesi said the commission remains confident in holding free, fair and credible elections.

“We will deliver a credible election and we are confident of that,” he said.

But in her contribution during a plenary after Mpesi’s presentation, Democratic Progressive Party director of elections Jean Mathanga, a former MEC commissioner, said while MEC is confident of holding free and fair elections, opposition political parties’ worry is on use of the election management devices.
